Bizarre. Colleagues of mine in New York, Chicago, Seattle and Washington DC have all told me that they won't be getting a chance to see Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End until Monday the 21st. And as far as I can tell, Vancouver won't be getting any previews of the film -- which opens Thursday the 24th at 8pm -- at all, though critics and whatnot might be allowed to see it for free on opening night. This is pretty unusual for such a major tentpole pic. Then again, rumour has it that the special-effects team has been working overtime to get the film ready for its release next week, so I'm not surprised this is so down-to-the-wire. On the other hand, the BC Film Classification board did post its rating for the film last Friday, and I assume they saw a finished print.
UPDATE: I just got word that there will be a press screening -- on Wednesday, the day before the film opens. Monday is a holiday here in Canada, so I guess that day wouldn't have worked.
Interesting about the Thursday-night opening. Did I tell you already that I received confirmation of a Thursday-night "preview" screening for press? Will, as you suggest, the press will be mixed with paying customers?
ReplyDeleteSorry, I don't know if the people who have passes to the "promo" screening will be mixed with paying customers, or if the "promo" screening will be held in a separate screening room. However, I just found out -- literally, within the last half-hour -- that there will be a press screening in Vancouver after all. But it's happening on Wednesday, which is still cutting it pretty close.
ReplyDeleteThe promo screenings at 8pm Thursday are seperate from the paying customers. However FamousPlayers.ca confirms theatres are allowed to play Pirates after 8pm on the 24th. So essentially the film opens at the same time the radio station winners get to see it and will be in a seperate auditorium.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Peter here that it's pretty last minute and had heard the film wasn't completed but that seems to no longer be the case as the publicity person has seen and it's been classified in BC. Is there really anything wrong with showing it to us on Friday or even Tuesday (though Tuesday is already stacked with press screenings).
if there still finishing some things up...that's got to make you wonder...
ReplyDelete"are they striving for perfection and not allowing it to be called done"
or
"they're just trying to get done and don't have enough time...forget perfection."
i hope for the 1st but imagine it's the 2nd.
